New crested gecko

Melle Sep 07, 2003 10:47 AM

Hello!
I just got a baby crested gecko at a reptile show. I have wanted one for a long time now, but they are just so hard to find for me! =) Anyways, I have read up on the care and everything, but i have a few questions. First of all, the guy at the show said he was a "flame." He is a dark red with the stripe on the back being a lighter orangish color. He's really cool lookin, but can anyone post a pic of their flames if anyone has one? I havent been able to find any pics of one with that phase name, so i was starting to doubt if whether that was even correct or not :P

anyhow, i was also wondering about the temps. I have read they like it 70-80...but thats a pretty wide range and i have read that some people recommend using an additional heat sorce while some say none is needed. well my thermomter reads about 75 for room temp. its a cheap little reptile thermometer so im not sure just how accurate it is, but would i be ok without a heat sorce? and i live in michigan, but if my room temp still reads in the mid 70s in the winter, would anyone still recommend an additional heat sorce? Thanks for any responses! =)

First of all, congrats on the new rhacodactylus! They are really awesome geckos...I recently purchased a baby "fire" cresty, and yeah, that is a coloration. It's because the pattern down their backs looks kinda like fire...but yeah it's a coloration. You can easily find a pic of a fire if you do a google image search. Just look for a crested w/ that pattern down it's back, and it's probably a fire.
Good luck.

Thanks! So its probably a fire, not a flame then. or im sure it means the same thing, lol. Here is *his* website I made, with a few pics, if anyone wants to see. Hes such a cutie pie, i love him (or her!) =) Oh, and I am feeding him that T-Rex "crested gecko diet" and some apricot and peach baby food. Not sure if hes eaten any of it yet. Thats all he needs though, right? Its not absolutely necessary to feed him insects, correct? Thanks for the help! =)

According to the t-rex diet, there is no need to feed your cresty any crickets in conjunction with the food, however some still feed crix. I dont imagine it really matters if you feed crickets AND that food...it might give it excercise, and some hunting fun...but it's you call.
