keeping rats warm??

ballfreak Oct 19, 2008 01:28 PM

i keep my breeding rats in a room that has no heat and is cold i cant keep a space heater on because im not there every day and im worried about fires and its also in a utility room so there is a hot water heater and furnace in that room. i just thinking of ideas on how to keep my rats a little warm in that room i do go every few days and i keep a space heater on for a few hours but than i shut it off. thanks for any suggestions.

as long as you don't have any that escape by chewing.
just tape it under the tub, and run a thermostat on all the heat mats.

actually the book i have on rats suggests against UTH b/c they can get too hot and cause thermal burns. if you want to try it maybe placing it on the side would be ok?

with UTH heat you have the tub, then the bedding. all you need to do is keep it on the lowest setting. having the heat on 90 make no sense you're not trying to cook them just keep them warm.

with a room being 50 or 60 which is cold, just having the heat on 70 will be more than enough. even though 70 is pretty cool.

the idea is to keep them warm NOT cook them.

rooms at 50 to 60 won't hurt rats...

.....ever watch them run along a creek in the snow?......

....out rooms like porches do get down to 30 ....

they don't need to be that warm

turning heater on then off will make the cage condensate moisture on the sides

heater and hot water heater in the room should be warming the room some?

....give them some bedding to make a nest ....would help

keep alot more rats...they alone will warm the room???...

...OK...so ...just keep checking the room's temp...if bottles don't freeze solid it's a start....

.......heater to use....space heater...the oil filled radiator looking ones?......don't set it on carpet? ,near curtains, near anything....or on uneven floor

...fires do happen.....

I run ceramic heaters 24 /7...365 days a year...in cellar ,in snake room,,,on cement floor....setting on stainless steel steam table pan........

........keep checking temps.....
