Long time lurker with BRB Qs

zimbabwepegasus Oct 19, 2008 01:52 PM

Hey guys,

At long last I got my little girl from Dave! Dave, I used to think you were a great photographer, but none of the pics compare to how stunning she is in person.

So my Q:
How dense should the cage smell?
She's in a 17q plastic tub with small holes drilled toward the top all the way around and she's on paper towels. She's got a herpstat at 77 connected to flexwatt. It's nice and condensationy looking in the enclosure. And it doesn't smell moldy or anything, just like stale wet air.
I just want to make sure she's getting enough air.

I will post pics soon, but I am trying (and it is very, very hard) not to mess with her too much while she gets used to her new environment.

As a consolation, I will post totally OT pics of everyone else I have. =)

Ella- my striped anery corn

Salvador- bloodred corn

Fiona the Biting Gecko

Pele being totally mad about being stuck in a bath

Sinclair my monster boy

Hey Kerry, I tell everyone it's darn near impossible to truely capture their beauty in a pic. I'm just lucky to have excellent subjects and a good camera. Not a great photographer by any means.

So glad your happy with her.

How small are the holes? My tubs have no holes but there is a small gap between the tub and rack (very small).

You've had her for a few days now so you should be able to start taking her out a little at a time.

Cool looking collection and waiting to see how well you do getting her true beauty captured.

Why, good afternoon Dave.
They're screwdriver size holes... if that helps.

I did take her out. She's so good. She spends 30 seconds coiled and then is stretching out and exploring. Compared to corns, she is soooo strong. My corns always think they are stronger than they are and stretch too far and fall down. But she seems to have a pretty solid understanding of how far she can reach. That or I get nervous on her behalf and already have my other hand ready...

And no I can't take better pics than you. I just got frustrated without how inaccurate they were! But I'll just keep plugging away at it. It makes me really want to see BamBam in person!

Sounds like decent ventilation so probably OK.

Like I said before, the only thing saving me on pics is a really nice camera and that still doesn't capture the true beauty!!!!

In a 17 Qt tub - she should have enough air no matter what. If the paper towels get moldy there may not be quite enough ventilation, but if they dry ow too quick - not quite enough. It will take time to get things dialed in - as the ambiet humidity in you house plays a huge part too.

Also, good name brand paper towels hold mositure much better than cheap ones.

Yeah, Sinclair is kinda like my dog. He comes to the door of his cage half the time I walk by, in the summer he'll go to happy hour.. etc. The best part is that I actually got him in a pet store for all of $60. Then he turned out to be all bright & fiery.

Thanks for easing my ventilation concerns and the paper towel info. I have decent ones right now and it's nicely fogged up, so I'm thinking she's okay there.

AND- she ate her first meal in my care yesterday. I feed F/T, and was a bit nervous about trying the whole live thing out. So I waited until she was out of her hide and tossed the mouse in and sat down to watch. But no, she wouldn't go for it. So I turned my light out and couldn't see a thing and promptly hear a mouse squeal and a thud as my snake flung herself into the opposite side of her tub.
Guess I'll try pre-killed next.

And Dave... can I please thank you again!

You are most welcome, I'm always happy to get them into the hands of a new owner that appreciates them.

Two additional thing....

heavy condensation is fine but will lead to very damp paper towels = freqent changes to prevent mold.

F/T - go for it, many will transition with little to no effort. Remember, a hungry snake will transition much more readily then a not so hungry one. Try the F/T feeder, if not eaten, let her wait till the following week for another F/T offering. If they get good and hungry, they will eat just about anything. Hmmm, might want to watch your fingers during that transition process!!
