Some of you may remember I posted about my WC female pac gopher that went ballistic when I tried to feed her a f/t small rat (she eats mice no problem) - I wasn't sure if it was the size or the scent of the rodent that freaked her.
It was apparently the scent. I've got a bunch of baby rats bred by me primarily for my burm that are just now hitting 5 weeks of age (one litter will be 5 weeks tonight, next tomorrow night).
The litters include some double rex as one of my females is rex and one of my males is rex, the double rex babies seem to grow slower - so I'm using them as feeders for my colubrids.
The 4.5' female pac gopher completely flipped out at the scent of them as well, wanted nothing to do with them, so I'm guessing she had a bad experience with rats in the wild.
What's amazing though, my little male loves them. It's not amazing that he loves them, it's amazing that he was only 14" when collected in March and is now eating 5 week old rats.
But my big girl - I guess it's mice for her, moving her to rats probably would be more work than it is worth.
