Trolligans Oct 20, 2008 02:50 PM

How many of you pick a theme for your snake names? Have any of your snakes ended up with personalities similar to their namesakes?

Mine are all named after pirates.

Calico Jack Rackham
Stede Bonnett
Grace O'Malley
Anne Bonny
Flora Burn
Jean LaFitte
Blackbeard
and Francis Drake

what about you guys? Where do you get your snake names?

That's an interesting way to name your animals. I am naming mine after states currently, So far I've only got Indiana but the list will grow fairly soon. Hopefully.

chrish Oct 21, 2008 11:58 AM

I don't name my snakes other than to describe them and I only do that to maintain my feeding/weight records.

For example, I have four Eryx johnii. They are
sunburst male
brown male
speckled female
brown female

For WC snakes that I collected, they have catalog numbers as well, so I have
Pandale female alterna CRH485

Otherwise, they don't come when I call, so why name them?

I don't know. It brings to me a sense of personality and and makes me feel like I know my animals. It's really just a personal choice.

Only a few of my snakes have names, but the ones that do are for the most part Star Wars themed (I'm not sure why, I don't have any particular obsession with Star Wars).

California King - Chewbacca
Mexican Black King - Vader
Bay of LA Rosy Boa - Han Solo
Normal female Kenyan - Greedo

My only named snake that does not have a Star Wars themed name is Optimus Prime, my female anery Kenyan Sand Boa.

My Rubber Boas and all the other Kenyans/Rosy Boas don't have names.

I haven't really picked a particular theme for naming my reptiles...although I like to try and give them off the wall and unusual names..

Snakes I have now are..

male Macklot's - "Pixel" because his freckled skin looks like little pixels

male Sonoran Gopher - "Osh Gosh Labarsky" or "Oshy" Just because he's 14 years old and I was a kid when I was picking out his name =P

male albino Black Rat snake - "Vegas" Because he came from Exotic Pets in Las Vegas

male Jungle Carpet - "Taboo" because he's big, bright and beautiful and needed a really exotic name

female greenish rat snake - "Ember" because she has very soft features and needed a soft name.

male smooth earth snake - "Little Zuni" Because he's little and cuuuuute!

in the past I've had a black rat snake named "Leon" a black racer named "Tango" a bullsnake named "Irwin" after Steve Irwin, a garter named "Pearl" and a ball python named "Nagini" after Harry Potter

my boyfriend has a milksnake named "Maurice" and a ball named "Melvin"

As for my other reptiles...

a Beardie named "Twyman" he's named after my boyfriend's uncle's brother..because that is the funniest name for a person I had ever heard...and the day I finally get to meet this guy, I'll proudly tell him I named my lizard after him! :P

a red foot Tortoise named "Marzipan" she's named after a character from www.homestarrunner.com

and my 7 American Toads are "Kirk" and "Marquis" (males) and "Lucy", "Ethel", "Bertha", "Starlet" and "Olga"

and 2 fire-bellied toads named "Spot and Dot"

Some might call me delusional, or just plain crazy, but I give all my animals names, because to me they all have their own personalities and I love every single one of them like family.

Mine don't seem to pick up personalities from their names. How many of yours are out pillaging etc. ?

ALL of mine are named and many themes have been used over the years. I like them to have unique names and I use parental names in numbering the babies so they can always be traced back to the parents. To that end each animal has a unique name and a two digit abbreviation.

You know these, but for everyone else's benefit:

Smeagol & Smaug (Ball & Carpet Pythons, respectively)

Maya and Aztec (Pueblan milk and Thayeri)

Ocotillo, Lava, Phoenix (Hondos)

Juno (blue-eyed blond Cali, after the movie Juno)

Domino (black and white Cali)

Titus (Sulcata) After Christopher Titus

I think those are the only ones with names...although I'm thinking of naming the new Honduran Psycho. Fits her personality.

All of my snakes but the first(Cosmo--from Seinfeld) are named after Grateful Dead songs. Didn't plan on it, but started with Sugaree and kept going. Luckily they have more than a few songs so I can keep this up for a long time!

I originally meant to name all my snakes but the right ones never came to mind. At one point I even thought of the best naming theme and then forgot about it completely. I've been thinking of Greek gods or characters from Homer's epic poems. Right now my only snakes that have names are ones that my roommates or girlfriend named out of confusion. I guess if someone doesn't know each individual snake on a personal level then it might be hard to know what the heck I'm talking about when I start talking about four different kinds of milksnake and even more kingsnakes, especially when the words "mexican" and "black" both appear several times.

One of my roommates started calling the california king "Theo". It stuck.

mfoux Oct 22, 2008 08:53 AM

One of my friends started calling my Thayeri "Thayerden King", as in King Theoden from Lord of the Rings.

Aztec, a.k.a. Thayerden King:

Funny subject, like it...

I have Lola (Hondo Milk-hence the username), because I spoil my animals, so it seemed suiting. ("what ever Lola wants, lola gets...etc)

My daughter named her Ball Python, Neo. It means "gift", which also suits, because I got him for her as her 7th birthday present.

I guess you could say we named them after our personalities and/or what they mean to us.
