What snake should I purchase

NCMedic964 Oct 20, 2008 09:10 PM

Ok here's the deal I have pretty mch run the gamnit with reptiles. I have managed over 180 boids and colubrids at once as well as some limited experience with lizards. That was all in the past, I haven't owned a reptile in the last few years. For a number of reasons, one is space O don't have a huge amount of space. Another reason is my fiancee has been dead set against it. Now, that being said, I am making vast breakthroughs on that front. She still says no but it's not the same "no" you know whhat I mean. Anyway, assuming that goes my way, I would like some suggestions on which snake to buy. Now, I don't care for Colubrids, I am a boid fan. I need a Boid that won't get much larger than 6 foot. I don't want a run of the mill Red Tail. Also, I don't have the room for an arboreal snake. So if you guys have any ideas or suggestions please drop me a line.

Went to a reptile show last weekend and they had the coolest rubber boas (wish I got one). I also like many of the ground boas and viper poas. They stay small and could be a fun challenge to work with.

I would recommend a rosy boa, they are small and usually a very docile handleable snake, not to mention they are beautiful.

I'm biased, but rosy boas are just cool animals. Still very much a boa, without the size and humidity requirements, and not squirmy like colubrids.

Spotted pythons are also cool animals, just not very colorful.

Another larger interesting boid might be a Dumeril's Boa. They rarely get to 6 feet, are commonly bred (although not as much as a few years ago) and are docile. They are also pretty terrestrial.

A Rainbow Boa would be another interesting choice. They come in a variety of color phases (subspecies) some of which are very colorful, are very hardy, and usually quite docile.

Of course, there are a number of other good small boid choices...
Ball Python
Spotted/Children's Python
Short-tailed Python
any of the Sandboa species
Rosyboa
small races of the Carpet Python (Jungle, Irian Jaya, etc)

I'm just a little biased - Brazilian Rainbow Boas!!!

Only around 6 foot in length and VERY impressive looking snakes, many colors available, some of which are very bright....

Here's just a sample...

They do require a higher humidity level but with a properly set up cage, is a no brainer!!
