I made logs...

tokaysrnice Oct 21, 2008 09:04 PM

...out of PVC.
I'm going for something that looks better than PVC to me but is very easy to clean Drymarchon/Spilotes/Pseustes logs off of. The snakes love all the extra crawl spaces created and its a lot easier to clean than real logs.

These were made with a torch, hacksaw and a dremel tool. I think next go I'm going to use bondo and paint and see which one I like better for me and the snakes.

Very nice job, it is much larger then initially appeared to be. How long did it take from start to finish?

I agree, very nice. That must have taken some time.

Thanks guys. The large one took the better part of 2 hours beer breaks included. The smaller one only took about 30 minutes.

Very nice Nate. Best torched PVC logs I have seen by far.

Thanks Chris.
I think after a couple more prototypes I'll get them to what I really want, actual plastic logs.

Very nice Nate. Is that the Vision 54inch? Really looks like your taking advantage of the height of the cage.inspiring cage pic.

tokaysrnice Oct 23, 2008 06:04 PM

Thanks Bob,
Yeah its the 54" cage, I really like the size except for the fact that I have to crawl inside to clean poops being its 3' deep. Regarding using the vertical space that was really my idea for making these logs. Not only can the Cribos climb on them they can also crawl through them, you can barely see the inhabitant under the hide on the left side.

Very nice job.

You should market those.

I believe people sell these already, granted they're just the torched plastic variety. When it comes down to it, if my time is worth say $10 and it takes me 2 hours to make the large ones, materials cost are $10 that makes it $30. I'd have to sell them for at least $50 to make it worth my while. I would rather spend my freetime taking care of my snakes. Plus they're not good enough for mass consumption IMO, maybee worth selling at a couple shows for sure though.

And I for one could simply not contribute to the mass killing of anymore of your brain cells. I'd have to send you a respirator and large fan out of sympathy.

Dude breathing burnt PVC is the least of my worries, I'm sure all the concusions I've had, and the ages of 16-25 were/are way worse!

And yes I do use a respirator, so to others reading this thread please use common sense or you may not have any left..haha

That's what I was getting at. Who knows how many you have left!

Just curious but what respirator did you use? Any sort of special filter?

Oh man, I agree. Anyone doing this to PVC must wear the proper respirator and do it outdoors in a breeze if possible.

I have done several for my chondros and would like to change to wood.

Redmoon Oct 24, 2008 10:02 AM

Did you put something on it to make it shiny? I can't tell if it's wet, or coated with something.
These do look really cool! I've been wanting to try something similar out myself, and I think I'll have to now!

thanks,
Ronnie Nocera
