Aspen for bedding??

hatchdragon Sep 07, 2003 01:06 PM

Had a customer come in and they had their dragon on aspen. I have allways used sand and was just wondering if there are any specific dangers in using aspen. Thanks.

Compaction! Do not use Aspen for a dragon. It is great for snakes but not Dragons.

Yup,, it's called an Umbilical evisceration (gutted) What happen was,,,, The clutch had fungus, only two of 4 eggs made it to hatching (the others went bad right away) Anyway,, the fungus can work into the egg, rendering some of the yoke hard and unusable. Since it is unusable it was still attached to the snake and when he came out, it pulled some of his insides out. I took him to an awesome herp Vet that afternoon and he stuffed him and patched him back up. So far he is still alive. (it happen on Tues) He is in his first shed so when he is done, I will feed him & see if the insides will work.
I'm glad he made it this far but I'm not getting too excited until he eats & poo's.

I'll keep you updated.

I was wondering about that pic!! This is completely off the subject and very strange that you included that pic with your response.... but my 7 month old daugher was born with gastroschesis.... much like the snake... her intestines were outside her body through an opening in her abdominal cavity. The drs did much the same thing for her... of course it took them longer!! They had to hang her intestines over her in a bag for 6 days and they just fell back into her abdomen as the swelling went down. It was actually amazing. She is A-OK now!! Miraculously, a perfectly healthy normal baby... just minus a belly button!! Oh and thanks for the bedding info!! I will have to hunt that ladies number down tomorrow.

It's amazing that a snake can even live through that. Hope she does well, she's beautiful.
