Picture of Black eyed Suriname

Joel_Thomas Oct 22, 2008 02:45 PM

I have seen the richer colors posted this year with these black eyed Peruvians and was wandering if there is something to this black eye thing?

I have a male Suriname that has black eyes and he is in my opinion the most colorful and contrasting snake in my collection, even when he is in shed he is gorgeous.

Does anyone have animals with the black eyes that are more colorful? Can anyone give an opinion as to what might be going on with the black eyes?

Here are some pic's taken earlier this year, he is in blue right now but I will take some more when he is done.
I am NOT representing this animal as a "hyper-pigmented" Suriname but there is something very different about him. keep in mind this guy is a solid seven feet and probably closer to eight.

After his shed I will get better pic's of the eyes but for now this is the only shot of the eye I have.

thanks for looking

I wish I could capture the true color, I have a much better camera now so when he sheds I will get more up.
Take care Greg.

Joel, there is obviously much more going on " with the Peruvians particularly " than just the black eyes.

I have had and kept many Peruvians over the years and seen more than I could count and have never seen anything like these Hypers, in Peruvians.

I have also had as many Black Peruvians and Melanogaster as anyone I know.

Of all the Black Peruvians and Melanogaster I have had and seen " not that there is a surplus of them, " I have never had one of even the Blackest pigmentation, with black eyes.

I do not feel that the Black Eyes on these Hypers are the " Key " if you will, but just an added bonus to the array of unique characteristics that they have in general.

After seeing them in person, it was enough for me to want to keep all of the Hypers and Het females.

I remember the first ones I seen Polaroid pictures of over 15yrs ago and did not see the trait pop up again, until Gus produced his several years ago and still did not realize how neat they were, until getting these.

I talked to my buddy Vin Russo the other day and I do not like quoting people these days, but Vin seemed to believe that it was definately a recessive trait as Albinism is.

There are a few running around out there now, but how many of them will actually make it to maturity and be bred in the future?

Probably not many.

Gus, should be the first one in the next couple of years to show what these will look like " going to the next level of possibly a Super Form " and it will be exciting to see for sure!

With an animal such as a Peruvian, it is a long project.

You will never raise these up and breed them in 24 months and so they should prove to be a good and long term investment.

However, it may take a while to build a real Market for them and why right now " they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay. "

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Thanks, Joel......JJ

Yes I agree there is much more going on than just the eye's, and will be exciting to see what comes of a pairing of two homozygous animals or offsping to parent.

How many B.c.c. boas have you seen with the black eyes other than Gus's or the ones you have?

I would tend to agree with Vin that this should prove to be a recessive trait, but like you said it will be at least a few years before we know.

I for one will think the market to be huge! I also fear it may cause a morph craze with the B.c.c. But that is all speculation.

Thanks and take care.

That was the point brother.

Even the Black Peruvians I have and have had, do not have Black Eyes and no other Boas have ever had them that I have seen, except the first Hypers that were produced by Ken Counts about 17yrs ago.

However, I do not feel like " just having black eyes " would indicate that an animal has something " special " going on.

It should exhibit other " weird " or " abnormal " characteristics, " at least in my belief. "

Thanks, JJ

Yeah I think we are talking the same thing just different languages.

JJ,
I, like you, am not extremely well versed in morphs. However, I do believe that if a trait is recessive, there is no such thing as a "super" form of it. So, if it's recessive, we've seen the highest form of expression, except in the case of selective breeding.
For example, an albino boa is recessive. Hets can't be visually distinguished from normals, just like we speculate with the Hypers, hence "possible hets". Only the albino is visually distinguishable. Breeding two albinos together only makes more albinos, not a super albino. Make sense?
Hope that helps and I, like many others, look forward to solidifying our understanding of the genetics behind the "hypers".

Absolutely JB.

That was what I should have said.

I used the word " Super " to lightly, I do in fact believe, however, that they could get better through selective breeding for sure.

Time will tell and we have plenty of time on this project to see for sure.

Even Gus holdbacks from a few years ago, have still allot more to go as far as coming into their full potential.

As me and Vin were talking about the other day and I believe " Gus would agree, " Peruvians in general, can go through changes for many years.

So, time may still have much more to reveal with the ones that are out there right now as far as how weird they will eventually get.

Things like genetic's are difficult for me to express because of my lack of understanding, you helped clear things up a little.

I did not even catch the "super" tag because this is all so new to the locale community. I do think we need to find out what it is when we use the term "hyper"...hyper what?

Think of the laughter we will create if the morph guys find out about this post LOL...

Thanks again Johnathan
