08 jani update

mattkau Oct 22, 2008 11:00 PM

My 08 female jani ate a live pinkie this evening! I've had her since Aug. 15. She ate a FT fuzzie on the 21st and 28th of aug., and then not again until sept. 19th, which she then regurgitated. I gave her more of a temp. gradient by adding heat tape. I think the lower night temps. we are now having may have also contributed. Also, I read on the king snake forum that someone had success with putting a piece of one inch pvc pipe in thier hatchling king enclosures. I thought this would be a good idea for pits, so I cut a ten inch piece and put it in her tub a few days ago. Today I was finally able to get some live mouse pinkies and when I got home she was out of her hide. I put the pink in her tub and she retreated into the pvc pipe. I put the pink in the pipe and about twenty seconds later I heard the unmistakable sound of squeaking. I waited a few minutes and she came out with a small lump in her belly. I picked up the pvc pipe and looked through it, because I couldn't believe it . Now I hope she holds this small meal down. I was tempted to offer her another, but thought better not push my luck. I had given her about a fifty-fifty chance, looks like she has taken a step toward recovery. Thanks for all the advice I recieved from everyone and thanks John for telling me to have patience, hopefully it has payed off.

Forgot to mention that she had shunned live prey up until tonight. You never can tell what will trigger a feeding response in some snakes. I guess that part of the challenge. I wish I could find a reliable source of live pinkies because I also have a Porph. coxi female that only takes live now.

Those are beautiful snakes, Matt. Glad you finally got your female feeding regularly. You have a male too, right?

Yes, I have an '08 pair. I hope this meal leads to her feeding regularly. She has been a real challenge. The male has gotten to the point where he takes FT mice right off the tongs. The female has a way to go to get to that point, but hopefully she's on her way. Thanks.
