Water question?

beclende Oct 23, 2008 10:03 AM

Hey everyone. I have been trying something new for the past two months or so and I wanted to get your take on it. Instead of using dechlorinated tap water for my blood pythons I have started using the reverse osmosis water that you can buy at Kroger or WalMart. As well, instead of just changing out water once or twice a week I have been changing it as soon as I see my bloods using it so sometimes everyday. I have noticed after doing this for a while that I no longer get those huge urates that I used to with water from the tap and I get more frequent poops as well. Does anyone else do things this way? And if so what have your results been? I have to say for the extra maybe two dollars a week that it costs me the results have been great! No more bloods that look constipated and I can rarely feel urates in them that, definitely none that are the size of golf balls. Just wanted to share.

I dont use RO water, but I change water daily here. Not sure if that is the difference. Every morning we get a new batch of water in their bowls and the min I stick it in they drink.

I would agree with Cindy as many blood keepers have noticed that bloods drink very readily from fresh filled water bowls. To really test your hypothesis, you will need to fresh fill the water bowls daily for several months with tap water as well to see if that makes any difference. Also, how were you dechlorinating the tap water?

I used to use reptisafe water conditioner on plain old tap water, which is fine, but more and more snakes means more gallon jugs of that to make and I was already using RO in my fire skink terrarium so I switched everyone to that. Two five gallon jugs lasts a week. I have always had very fresh water for all of my snakes so I don't personally feel that there is any difference there. I think that the RO water has less mineral content and thus smaller softer urates. I could be wrong, but so far it seems to be making a difference.

I've been trying to get that across to people for a few years now. I had a bunch of Bloods at one time, most were wild caught, but I did have a few CH and CBB animals. The imports wouldn't touch water over 12 hours old. They would hold out for fresh water, untill I realized what was going on. I started changing water daily, and low and behold, everyone pooped 3-4 days after feeding. It took a little bit to get everyone "regular", but once they were, it was 100% consistant. No one seems to believe something so simple though. Unfortunately, the myth about these animals not pooping for months on end gets prepetuated all too much.
