Breeding-Rule of 3

merlin7676 Oct 23, 2008 11:11 AM

So I knew that generally the rule of 3 for breeding (3 years old, 300gm, and 30 inches) is good for femaales. But what about males? Same thing? Also since most snakes are born around summer, is that will be 3 years old or going to be 3 years old since they breed in spring?

thx

check the cornsnake forum. There's a MASSIVE thread on breeding size and a very educational response posted by donsoderberg.

this topic actually pops up about every 3-4 months.

I saw that you had some rat snakes. Just curious, what is the largest black rat you have ever seen or heard of? I found a snake skin this year in a ladies basement ( along with many, many others ) that was nearly eight feet long.

For kingsnakes, I've had 9-month old males breed with virtually no cooling (ambient air was cool, cage was heated on one end.)

With rosies, I've had a 9 month old breed and impregnate the female with no cooling at all except for nightime lows (done this 2 times with different males and different females.)

Rules? People make up the rules. The animals just breed when they are sexually mature enough to do so. And the 55 deg brumation thing is not the law, as my snakes mentioned above bred anyway and produced offspring.

This really depends on the species. Blood pythons, its best to wait until the female his 8 lbs before breeding. Starting early tends to result in a lot of slugs.
