Just to clarify...I'm not breeding them...I was just curious as they are both desert dwelling (for the most part).

I have founder and second generation Cal/thayeri, they were done by accident. But I really like them(too bad for those who don't, its your loss)

Also, Thayeri is not a desert dweller, they are mountain, Oak woodland type of snake, much like ariz mountain kings. They occur from at mid to high elevation.

With that said, I have found Thayeri and L.g.splendida, in the exact same spot. Only its the splendida that ventured to high elevation.

I may post some picks soon, the originals are not all that pretty, but some of the second generation are. Cheers

Frank, I'd like to see those pics too.

Heres a couple babies from this year, enjoy

heres a couple of reverse spotted calkings I hatched this year, from reverse spotted adults.

The above are being raised without water. Also their parents live together full time. Even during feeding. Cheers

There is a good example of wasting great thayeri genes on hybridization!

I agree. A "pure" desert Cal king or thayeri is much more attractive than those hybrids.

So its only about being attractive? I do have pure really nice desert black and whites and a wide varity of thayeri.

Hmmmmmmm oh its about being more attractive? I would guess that would be an individual thing. As in, what each individual person likes. Which kinda indicates, I like what I like, and you should like what you like.

But do I bash what you like??????? So why do you have to bash what others like??? That sir is the point here. Cheers

VICtort Oct 25, 2008 10:11 AM

Lest we be too quick to judge...the way those "hybrids" came into being is pretty interesting and not what you would expect if I remember FR's story correct. So no, not really "wasted genes". vic h.

tspuckler Oct 25, 2008 06:56 PM

I'm entitled to my opinion, Frank.

Deal with it.

Tim

FR Oct 25, 2008 10:44 PM

hahahahahahaha, I do not have to deal with your opinion. After all, its yours and has nothing to do with me.

Why don't you post a pic of something, then I can say its my opinion that I do not like it. hahahahahahahahahahaha it would not matter what it is. Cheers

FR Oct 25, 2008 08:45 AM

How would they be wasted? I still have lots of very nice pure thayeri. With perfectly great "pure" genes.

What folks like you miss is, its not subtraction, its addition. I have something more to enjoy, not something less. And yes, I still have what you have too.

So yea, I just have more to love about two of my favorite kings.

All in all, its you with some kind of personal problem. Cheers

Hi Frank,

Teh concern i have with aimals like these is what happens to them down the line. Unless you keep all the offspring and offspring from subsequent generations, they get into the collections of others who might not be as careful as you about their genetic identification. Several of your pix show animals many people could easily mistake as a pure cal king. Does it matter if someone else breeds their cal king to one of these, thinking they're perpetuating californiae, and they're not? That's the main issue to me.

Hey Terry, welcome back! As you know I'm not really hybrid adverse but neither am I an advocate (though some are quite beautiful). That said, I do think your concern is not a big one. If somebody wants to say they have "pure" anything the presents of hybrids in the hobby should not cause a problem. Breeders claiming purity of their lines just need to be very careful in the selection of their stock. If they eliminate all subjective criteria any perceived problem goes away. The alternative, wishing or insisting that the entire reptile breeding community fall in line and stop hybridizing things isn't rational. Perhaps I'm a bit too optimistic but I think its possible to keep and trade more pure forms alongside hybrid forms.
