CareFresh as a substrate for juvenile Savannahs?

Katrina Sep 07, 2003 01:56 PM

I've seen a few people use Care Fresh as a substrate for snakes, as they can dig and hide in it. Has anyone ever used it for juvenile Savannahs? For those that use dirt, are you disinfecting it before hand? From where are you getting it? I've always been afraid of using unsterilized "backyard dirt" for an animal that is in a relatively confined space, for fear of parasite overload.

Exactly what parasites are you fearful of?

First, monitors do not get snake mites.

Second, after using dirt for over five years now (from the ground to the cage), I have had external parasite problems once. The reason why I had this problem, was because the animals had both open wounds and were under severe stress (do to ignorance on my part).

In short, if you provide your animals with what they need, which includes providing them with burrows, you will not have a problem with external parasites.

My main concern is with intestinal parasites, such as pinworms.
