Building a Burm Enclosure

FunkyRes Oct 24, 2008 03:28 AM

Howdy all - not sure I've ever posted here or not.

I am the owner of a young male Burmese python.
I took him in as a rescue - the family owned pet store ordered him because they thought he was "pretty" and didn't understand how much more aggressive baby burms are than the ball pythons they usually deal with.

Having raised burms, I went in daily and handled him to help tame him down, finally they begged me to just take him off their hands, and I did, but I made them promise not to order another one (I have nothing against burm keepers, just anyone experienced enough to keep a burm knows where to get one shipped to their door for far less than small pet shop prices - probably why they couldn't sell it)

At any rate - he has just hit a major growth spurt (currently eating smaller adult rats), and while his current enclosure is big enough and I have an even bigger enclosure that could probably last him a little while, I think I may want to go ahead and hire a carpenter to build something much bigger.

I'm thinking 8' x 3' x 3' that will hopefully last several years, after which point I may convert my walk-in closet. I may not need to ever do the walk-in closet - I don't think he's got the genes to be a monster, he's an '07 but still just over 5 feet (yes, I feed him, just until his current growth spurt - his appetite has never been huge. Now though he's eating everything he can) - the burms I raised as a kid were over 6 feet at a year and about 8 feet at a year and a half (what I believe his age to be). But anyway - he has started a major growth spurt, so even though I'm cool for at least a year, I need to start budgeting for something bigger and hire a carpenter (sorry, I don't have the fancy power tools needed to do a really good job, nor the carpentry experience).

What would be great is if there are some general plans available somewhere that I can give to the carpenter to use in coming up with his design, preferably something designed by an experienced large snake keeper including provision for proper heating. Suggested materials would be awesome as well.

Before hiring a carpenter, I would suggest looking at some of the enclosures available online, especially the plastic/pvc ones. The price will be comparable, and you're sure to get an enclosure suited to your needs...especially taking humidity, water spills and liquid waste into account. That is sure to ruin any wood enclosure, and most plastic building materials he may have access to are cost prohibitive...trust me, I've checked!

Good luck, and check out the classified section here, and I'm sure you'll be able to find something that will suit your needs.
