HELP WITH NEW GUYANA!

resims Oct 24, 2008 06:32 PM

I just got a healthy and extremely fiesty female guyana on tuesday.when I first got her,man was she violent with me.Couldnt go in her cage without gloves, but ive been persistant and began holding her.Shes in a 20gallon cage with a heating pad, branches, water bowl and a heat lamp. The basking area is about 93 degrees with the cooler end at 78 to 80 degrees with temps dropping to around 74-75 degrees.Im wondering when is a good time to attempt to feed her because I tried yesterday but without any sucess.Should I wait longer?Im not shure what to do.Any help would be appreciated!

I generally give a week (or even two) before even attempting to feed a new animal. Temps sound ok. Cage will be WAAAAAYYY small to last for too long but for now it should be fine.

Congrats and good luck.

Fiesty or not , new Boas should'nt be held until feedings are regular. New Boas here don't get held for 4-6 weeks , except to move them to clean the cage.

Just my opinion, but I think 88 deg.F should be hot enough.
I'll bet that is part of the problem with her attitude.
Excess heat increases metabolism thus increasing stress.
It's as if the animal is amped up on something.
No glaring lights. No heat lamp. Increase humidity. Provide hide. If aquarium, cover all sides except front. If screen top cover half.
Could be mites. Mites put snakes in a foul mood.
Provide water bowl big enough for snake to completely submerge.
If snake spends most of it's time in water bowl, good chance you've got mites. Check water for dead ones.
