Largest black rat

joecop Oct 24, 2008 10:14 PM

Does anyone know what the record size is for a black rat snake? I found a shed this year in a ladies basement ( along with numerous others ) that was very close to eight feet.

An 8 foot shed could come from a 7 foot snake. It is a large animal, but it isn't even close to the record.

Wow. 101 inches is huge. Well, at least this one is still growing. I will look for it in the spring when they all show up in this ladies basement. My dad swears he has seen them nine feet long when working on her boiler, but you know how those stories go. That was the reason I went over to the house in the first place. The shed did come from a huge black rat though, so he was only off by two feet or so compared to most people claming a four footer was ten feet long!

The record is 101 inches (Conant and Collins, 1991)

That's what I could find searching the Internet anyway.

8.4 feet.

I once cruised the kingsnake forum, where you posted often. It was good to have your venerable insight there.

I am from NJ and I think you are referring to Frank Retes who uses the user name FR.

I once saw an exceptionally large Yellow x Texas Ratsnake. It must have been 8 feet at least.
