The reason cedar is used to keep pests such as moths out of closets is that it contains aromatic oils that are toxic. For this reason it functions as both a repellent and a pesticide.
The levels needed to kill bugs are relatively small. However, constant exposure to cedar (and pine) oils will also cause sickness in mammals, eventually killing the exposed animal. Reptiles are also sensitive to these oils so it is a good idea to avoid both pine and cedar as either a construction material or bedding for both your reptiles and any collection of feeder rodents you may be raising.
