womas not happy

1mccumber Oct 25, 2008 01:16 PM

I have a pair of adult womas I bought 2 months ago, I kept them in a large 40 by 20 sweater box with flexwat on one side a hide on the other and a water dish in the middle they seemed ok for the first week. After that they bolth started rubbing there noses and acting unhappy and i noticed condensation inside there cage so I made a bunch of holes along the top. They ate 3 medium rats in the first 15 days. Now they bolth wont eat and havnt for a month and a half, the female wont come out of her hide and bite me every time i hold her and tries to constrict around my arms. The male is restless and is rubbing his nose I built him a new cage with a hide built in the floor it is 2 ft by 4 ft with flexwat under one side kept at 90. I know these snakes are suposed to be alot more easy to feed and handle anyone have sugestions

My guess is that it is too hot. Try lowering the temps. Mine seem to enjoy around 80-85.

There are many variables but, the time of year might be a clue.
Put them together and see what happens.

Also, I agree that's a little warm. Try mid 80's. What is the ambient temps?

They should be lovin the rack set up...Mine do and they thrive and breed.

Cheers.

Womas are found in some of the driest areas in Oz. Too much moisture??? They get their humidity from underground tunnels, plus they will push against pretty much anything to get under it since they are burrowers.

I don't decide when my womas breed...they do. As soon as the male starts rubbing, I introduce him to the females...he's been breeding for a month now, and I only started cooling them down the first week of Oct.

In other words, let him have at her!

sounds like mating season to me...

If the male is restless and won't eat it's because he's looking for more females. If the female is off feed and always in her hide then maybe she's gravid...

Just a guess...

They were together for a little bit when I got them and they did breed but she dosnt appear gravid and I didnt cool them down at all. Is there anything I should do to prepare in case she is? If so its been about 2 months shouldnt she lay soon?

Well, I suppose setting up an egg-laying box and an incubator would be good for starters... If she's heavily gravid it would be obvious by her appearance and behavior. There are plenty of pics and descriptions of gravid womas online. Do a bit of searching and see what you can find...

There's alway the option of maternal incubation as well. Use a dark or opaque sweater box w/ slightly damp (not wet) sphagnum or peat moss and a hole in the side, and she will do all the work. But, that's assuming she's gravid.
