question on ackies

rcsolidum Oct 25, 2008 01:56 PM

Is there any reason for ackies to stay burrowed even during the day, when their basking lights are on and the room is heated up again. My ambient room temps hover around 78'F at night and go up to about 82-84' during the day. They have no ceramic heating element for nighttime, are temps to low at night? Or is it better to let the temps drop at night and raise them again in the morning so there is a noticeable difference for the monitors. Any thoughts and ideas would help, or ease of mind would be appreciated. Thank you

They seem to do what they want when they want. If they feel the need for some type of regulation becuase the conditions above are not right then perhaps they will stay burrowed all day.

My group on average seem to stay burrowed for about 12-14 hours a day, I do see them out quite a bit. This does not mean my conditions are good for them though, as it could easily mean that my underground conditions are not suitible for them, the door swings both ways.

Is it somthing you should worry about? Probably not, as long as your focusing on core husbandry (IE Temps, Humidity is varied throughout your enclosure, and food is readily available) your lizards will be just fine.

Goodluck,
Mike.

They have very good appetite, nice moist soil in one part of the enclosure. I did forget to mention they are burrowed right underneath the rocks below the basking light: I read an article that said they would burrow under the rocks to feel more secure. I am guessing that they are still able to take in plenty heat and still be safe. I will see if their feeding decreases, I will maybe add another heating element(uth?)... Thank you for your reply

I think you may be trying to fix a problem that doesn't exsist.

That is another way of basking, the surface holds heat, but so does the entire basking spot. They bask under a surface to prevent from being exposed to the open sky if they can.
