incubators

squidlyjoe Oct 26, 2008 12:39 PM

Hello,
What do you all prefer to use for incubators? Do you build your own? If so would someone be kind enough to give me construction advice? Or is there a manufactured one that suits ball pythons well. I will only have 4 clutches at the most this year so I won't need to build anything huge...yet.
Thanks very much
Bob

I build one just like the one in the link, but I did not cut windows in the top or drill holes in the side for the thermostat.

It worked great - I had a 100% hatch rate. The one foot of flexwatt was perfect. Just enough heat. It takes awhile to normalize, but the water bottles really help stabilize the temps.

It fits 8 6q sterilite containers.

Good luck!

Snakeshacks in Michigan makes a really nice incubator that works really well. I have one that I used all last season and it was perfect. I know several people that use Caseys incubators and are very happy with them, and his prices are really good too. Here is a link to his sight.....

I think people over think and over stress about incubators

Old Fridge
2-3 feet 11 inch flexwatt
Thermostat

I have hatched tons of clutches for the past buncha years...

no fans no water bottles etc etc

Natures Spirit has a small incubator that is just the right size for a small number of clutches. I think it holds like 8 - 10 clutches. We used one for a couple of years until the number of clutches forced us to build our own from an old fridge. I would recommend them highly. Steady temps throughout the incubator, not a lot of electricity used, front door is see thru so you don't have to open it every time you want to look, etc.

Good luck!

Thank you all so much for all of the great info. I have a couple more questions though. When you use an incubator fan do you let it run constantly? Also, how do you set up the egg containers? Do you drill holes in it? How do you prevent condensation from dripping back on the eggs?
Thanks again
Bob
