Nursing & multiple mothers in a tub ?

junglehabitats Sep 07, 2003 04:32 PM

Right now i have all my females but one that have head litters .I have them in a breeding rack that consits of 4 mason tubs that measure 26x17x6. the standard "rack set up ... between these mothers i currently have 32 babies i have placed 3 mothers for nursing these pinkies and at the current they seem to be sharing the duties with not much problem i still have one that hasent popped yet and i have placed two back in rotation with the males .question i have with the three nursing moms will they deplinish there milk to fast between these babies (32) to rightfully grow these up to pup stages or wenable ? should i take one of the two i placed back in with themales and put in the nursing tub?

Out of these 32 i plan on letting approx. 20 of them grow up for feeding of my larger snakes and then out of these approx 8 will be used for yearlings to feed .
and luckily so far only 3 pinkies have died but not due to there placement in the nursing tub , there were lost in the aspen from there moms and looks like they may have gotten to cold & died or been weak from birth
any advice if the set up like stated will be safe
thanks

Three moms should be able to take care of 32 babies without much problem unless the last litter was more than 2 weeks older than the first. Sometimes the smaller ones get edged out. Keep an eye on them and if thats happening, they can be seperated with one of the moms.

What type of rotation you are using.?

Thanks for the reply looks like as of now all is good . there is about 1 -1/2 weeks between litters but most of the first litter are in my snake tummies now lol so theres only 2 thats larger then the rest .
as for rotation i have them set up in a 4 tub rack and 2.6 breeding one tubs for the nursey , ones for odd feeders i buy until my stock grows up a little to serve as food for bigger snakes and then i have 2 that are for the 1.3 breeding when there going at it .

you mean you are tryin to make an automatic watering setup from old water bottles?..

i can tell you right now that it wont work

spend the extra money, goto www.agselect.com and just order the equipment to build a proper automatic watering system. the last thing you need to do is drown your animals because of a project gone bad..

best of luck

The reason it may not work is that the water bottles work on a vacuum to keep water in. The agleske.com watering system does not rely on a vacuum. I know this because I have checked out their web site very closely and saw that their watering stems have a silicone system where a thing round metal pin comes out of the silicone. When a rodent licks the metal pin, the silicone gives a space for the water to come out. When the pin is done being licked, the silicone returns the pin to its neutral position and water stops coming out.

This same system is the system that is on my water bottle for rabbit. what I mean is that I have an old rabbit water bottle that does not form a vacuum. The watering stem is of the silicone type for that reason.

sincerley.
