Is anery the same as axanthic? I see some snakes advertised as anery and some as axanthic - to my novice eye they look the same; they basically lack color.

Anerythristic means lacking red pigment.
Axanthic means lacking yellow pigment.
Amelanistic means lacking black pigment.
Albino means lacking pigment. Unfortunately, this term is used to describe amelanism in the herp community even though most albino snakes still have pigment (reds/yellows).
However, these terms are thrown around rather loosely in the herp community.

Someone put one together here on KS.com a few years ago. I can't vouch for the validity of all the definitions, but it is a great start.

Chris - thanks for the easy to understand answer.
>>Unfortunately, this term is used to describe amelanism in the herp community even though most albino snakes still have pigment (reds/yellows).
In spite of the obvious root, as far as I've been able to tell this is considered "correct" usage (albinism = amelanism).
I assume this is because it was first seen/described in humans...who's only pigment in melanin.
But, either way, it gets used prety loosely..,

What goes up must come down...unless it exceeds escape velocity.
Many terms are thrown about loosely.
Sometimes it is apparent that the intention is to bolster sales.
