white dot on spec caiman

tbone21 Oct 27, 2008 11:24 AM

I have a 2 ft spec caiman. I have noticed a white spot on its back foot on the right side on its middle toe. Any ideas what it could be? And if so what could be done to treat it? Other than this it is very healthy it eats well, and it has its usual great mean attitude lol. This is the only thing I noticed.

If you are able to provide a photo, that would be of great help. Aquatic reptiles (caiman and turtles) can be prone to fungal and bacterial infections. I've never encountered the problem personally on a crocodilian, but have dealt with fungal and bacterial infections on aquatic turtles. They may be a secondary infection, for example, the caiman cut it's toe and it got infected, in which case it will likely need an antibacterial medication. The affected site would look like an infected wound (possible swelling, discolored, weeping puss, bleeding etc.) Sometimes a good cleaning and applying some hydrogen peroxide and or rubbing alcohol will do the job if the infection is not bad. A fungal infection will look kinda cottony, it may be a little raised and irritated looking. It can be treated the same way. Another good medication that is easily available is a sulfa-block ( i.e Dr. turtle, available at most petshops that sell reptile supplies). These blocks will treat fungal and bacterial infections. I like to keep Dr. turtle in my caimans water at all times, as it can be used as a preventative as well. And of course water cleanliness is of utmost importance.

Or the white spot could be something less threatening such as a healing wound. My dwarf caiman cut his foot on a jagged rock. It never got infected, but the scab was white...

Hope this helps.
