Question on Dwarf Retics....?

knottydread Oct 27, 2008 11:49 AM

So I just picked up what was called a "Dwarf" Retic the other day. Is there anyway to really tell that it truely is a Dwarf?

This is probably a stupid question and the responses I'll get will be time will tell... yadaya...

So will I have to wait 2 years before I know if I really have a Dwarf or if it is just a regular retic?

I'm hoping it will stay under 20ft, I figured that the dwarf will max out at 12 feet given the fact I'm not going to feed it all the time?

Might be some neat or easy way to (very quickly) find out if your retic is a dwarf. But unfortunately, I don't know it......
It really does come to an act of faith on your part that the breeder, store or person you got the retic from, was telling the truth, I suppose.
Oh, there was a Jampea Dwarf Retic female at a local store brought in recently for trade, that was pushing an easy 15 feet in length. Amanda Black's (The young woman that recently died) husband, owns a male Jampea Dwarf, at around 6 years of age that's a bit over 13 feet in length.
You may wanna revise your 12 foot estimate in potential length for adult-sized, dwarf retics.

One way to tell is observing the black part of the pattern. On the smaller localities the black is only one scale wide. More then one scale wide chances are you have a cross or not even that. It really is pretty easy to tell if you know what to look for. I cringe at times when I see dwarf retic listed in the classifieds. Many do not fall into this description and are not one of the smaller localities. Then there are those that do.

Here is an example of what I am trying to describe:

As Jim posted, they have a very characteristic pattern, and there are several people on this forum who would be able to make the determination.

Whats the actual expected size of a true dwarf retic?
I'm totally in love with the way they look, but have no interest in getting anything over about 6-8ft long.

I believe actual size of the dwarf can be anything between 12-16 feet..

Superdwarf should stay around 10 if I'm not mistaken..

The one I picked up that is called a "Dwarf" is a lavender albino.. (this is why I'm so suspect)

I tried to take some pics with my crappy digital camera but the color didn't come out very good. I did a google search and this is what she looks like...

Do dwarf lavender albinos really exist? Is the one this guy picked up potentially a dwarf?

I'd own 12 if they didnt get any bigger than they are in that picture hehehe. 4-5 feet maybe?

Good luck, I hope your snake is exactly what you hope it is, and not what you think it is.

There are dwarf albinos, but they're actually crosses between the dwarf localities and an albino. Where'd you get it from? Dwarf albinos aren't all that common right now. I can only think of a handful of breeders that have them.

Here's a few pics of what was said to be a "dwarf"....

I'm guessing its a regular retic, very nice none the less..

Here is my '04 pair of dwarf albinos. I have a white phase male that is around 10':

This is a lavender phase female, around 12':

There aren't a lot of people producing dwarf albinos. I would talk to the person you purchased her from and try to trace her lineage back.

That is a sweet snake man.... I probably don't want to know how much the real dwarf albinos cost... Based on the price I paid for mine it looks like I'm going to have 1 huge snake on my hands..

the true way to tell dwarves as albinos from what ive seen is their eyes, they have a white spiderweb goin thru their orange eye. i have 2 true dwarfs at 4 yrs old they are close to 6 ft and very girthy. i hate to say it but pattern, color and size wise your animals also look like normal albinos. heres a pic for reference.

Here's you're pic, looks like a nice animal:

you can just put the image URL in between [ I M G ] and [ / I M G ] (without the spaces) in the body of your message.

I haven't seen those white areas in the eyes before. That is interesting. I've never noticed it in the male, he's in shed right now so I'll have to wait to get a better look. The female has silver eyes. They were produced by Mike Wilbanks in 2004 out of his dwarf albino projects, so I don't have any reason to believe that they are not dwarfs.
