Proper diet for Midland water snake?

evers310 Sep 07, 2003 05:03 PM

What is the proper diet for a Midland? I read that goldfish are not good for them. That's what i've been feeding him as it's all they have at Petsmart.

Thanks

I don’t know if goldfish are harmful, but if you want alternative fish prey for your snake you can buy minnows at bait stores. Click here for an earlier discussion on various foods for water snakes.

Try and stay away from goldfish if you can. While they do provide a meal, they aren't very nutritious and may even lead to thyamine defficiency over time. I feed my fish-eaters Rosey Red minnows (which I have seen at PetSmart) supplemented with a frozen/thawed, fish-scented mouse about once a month. You should be able to switch a Midland over to an all mouse diet without too much trouble, if that is more convenient for you.

Thanks for the info guys, The petsmart in my area only has goldfish, I'll have to ask them if they will carry anything else. I have a bait stor right around the corner from me. I'll go by and see what they have today.
