Male breeding size opinion

mfoux Oct 28, 2008 12:01 PM

Hey guys, I've got a male Pueblan who's on the smallish side (24", but pretty stout). I really want to breed him to my two females (36-40", 350-400 g) in the spring. My question is should I brumate him with my others in early December, feed him through the winter and try to put some size on him, warm him early and start feeding him after only two months, or give up on him and wait another year? He's growing steadily and doing well, but I don't expect him to put on alot of size before I stop feeding in late November. I really don't want to miss another year with my Pueblans; I'm just feeding these nice healthy females and not getting any eggs!
So what do you guys think? Brumate as normal and go for it? Feed through the winter? Shorter brumation? Wait another year?

Mike, I have bred many pueblans at 24 inches before. How old is he? I would just brumate him with the others and go with it.He either will do the job or he won't.Nothing lost either way really.

Thanks Shannon.

I don't have any age data for him, but I believe he is an 08 hatch. He's grown quite a bit since I got him in June.

I've bred Hondos for two years now with NO brumation...as long as he sees a natural reduction of light cycle(via a window or lights on a timer)...followed by an increase in light cycle prior to breeding he's better off staying up and eating...and putting on size. I would keep heat (on one side) on him as well to ensure proper digestion.

My two pennies...

What? if he is a (08) then I doubt he will be interested in breeding at 9 months old.
Good luck,
Shannon

I would feed the snot out of him and not brumate...

I used to breed campbelli for years...and got double and triple clutches from all.....TILL I brumated one year....then I got 0 eggs that year.....and couldn't get them started again the following....brumating messed them all up>???......I know another guy that had this happen too )

I feel the same way with the same situation. I just plan on feeding them until probably the end of December, power feeding schedule, brumating them until March or April, and if they breed, they breed. And if not, I'll just be disappointed. LOL.
