I like the two patternless ones. The red one looks like many I produce.

Mark, are you breeding any patternless to patternless? Unfortunately both patternless I posted are males. Would have been even sweeter if they were a pair.

CrimsonKing Oct 28, 2008 07:54 PM

I have been emailing you but no response. I lost my male and need one of those guys....
I will have some back ups in line for next year though..

Some of those patternless kings are smokin'!

Some of my kings from a few different locales further south should be breeding for the first time this coming season.

Sean Oct 28, 2008 01:38 PM

Nick, did you get anything to breed this year? How are those Kings doing you've found around your area?

foxturtle Oct 28, 2008 02:40 PM

I got one clutch of eggs from a high yellow Hillsborough County king to a non-locale morph (lavender). Out of 15 eggs, 3 hatched. Not the most exciting project...

My locale kings did not breed this year. All of the males showed interest, but the females were in anti-breeding mode. I've been feeding the females a lot this year in an effort to get them into better breeding condition for next year. I'm pretty confident everything will work out next year.

Sean Oct 28, 2008 02:48 PM

How late did you attempt to breed them? The AKs bred late this year with the first clutch hatching around mid-September. The other two were in early October. Last year my males were all over the females with none reciprocating but I think I gave up too soon.

foxturtle Oct 28, 2008 02:57 PM

I was putting them together all the way up into June. The males were still all over the females, but the females were still just whipping and trying to get away.

You did dim the lights, put on some Barry White, get some candles going, etc. didn't you.

Tony D Oct 29, 2008 08:07 AM

Do you really need to be giving away trade secrets like that?

There were about 19 offspring all together I think.

Tony D Oct 28, 2008 01:21 PM

Very nice. Though they are all nice I gotta say that last neonate is a real looker. This is just my opinion but not too manny snakes out there have the vibrant and colored contrast of a neonate blotched. With all the selective breeding and crossing I don't see too many classic blotched kings any more.

I agree. The last one is definitely smoking. I'm more partial to less red so that one should turn out to be one beautiful adult someday.

Tony D Oct 28, 2008 02:28 PM

I'm partial to anything hi color but in my experience the presents of yellow indicates that the color will persist into adulthood. Red is no as good an indicator of adult color. Outside of that I really like its kind of striped yet patternless look. Just a real smoker all the way around.

I think the high red juvies are certainly attractive but I'm with you on ones that come out lighter/more yellow. Red never lasts into adulthood and of all the ones I've seen, they're rather unattractive IMO. Just my personal taste.

foxturtle Oct 28, 2008 02:54 PM

...looks attractive in hatchlings, but doesn't seem to be retained into adulthood. In some kings the red fades to a nice peach coloration, but it seems in most cases it just turns to a brown or a dull orange and just obscures what would otherwise be bright crossbands. At least, thats what I have seen in my collection.

Thanks

daveb Oct 28, 2008 07:26 PM

wow very nice. it seems like you have quite a project going there. considering the revival of interest in eastern kings over the last few years, maybe it is about time for a revival of classic goini. thank you for the pictures and post.

in the light, you will find the road...

Sean Oct 29, 2008 06:06 AM

Thanks Dave. I think there's always been an interest in these Kings but Keith Hillson certainly helped revive them with his website. If there's one thing about Apalachicola Kings, the variety of patterns among them varies greatly. Makes it hard to decide which ones I really like best.

Congrats Sean!
I sent you an e-mail a few weeks ago. Did you
happen to get it?
