Any info on this monitor?

MikeT Oct 28, 2008 10:02 PM

Does anyone know anything about this monitor? I'd be interested in seeing some more pics of it and info.

What they call a record for a male is smaller than my little girl Sobek (shorter), she was 6ft 8 inches last year, I know shes grown in weight.
The weight is far over exagerrated, a 5-5.5ft male albig would be about 16-20lbs, unless it was seriously overweight. An example of a large male that was very healthy, but a few extra lbs on him was Titan who lived in the San Diego zoo for many many years, he was 6ft 9 inches and 39 lbs. Id venture to guess that Sobek is around that weight now (36-39 lbs).
Albigs are partially arboreal by nature, they are light for their size and bulk.
This was one of those pictures some reptile business took at a very deceptive angle to post on their website to help advertise their animals. Probably some owner raised then gave it to them (hoping it would get a good home). It could also be some customers pet that visited the store, so they take credit for the animal for the sake of trying to sell more imported BTs.
If you can find out any actual info on it, let us know. Somehow I dont think you will, most large monitors dont live long when given to petstores.

LOL, I love how things become fish stories - Titan (who was definitely not overweight) did not measure 6'9" - he was around 6'2" max on a good day. Perhaps you are mixing him up with Skritch, my ornate, who was larger and fatter (when I got him).

Was inaccurate about his size, along with other articles and pictures taken years ago when Titan was still alive?
I have an old article from Feurary 1998 where according to you he was 5ft 10 inches. But years later Mark Bayless wrote that he was up to 6ft 9 inches and 39 lbs.
Just going by someone who was a pretty accurate source for many years on specific animals, their owners, their sizes, etc.
Here is my little girl, she was 6ft 8 inches last year, and around 36 lbs.

LOL, yes, that is what I'm saying. Hmmm, believe Mark or the person who raised Titan? lol, so no, he never got to 6'9"

SHvar Nov 04, 2008 07:00 PM

Being held by the late Mr King. I thought that he seemed to be the same size as Sobek physically at that time (STV). I believe that both had died by the time the book was published.
Like I said Mark was a pretty accurate source many times, and I always enjoyed his emails and correspondance.
So what is the biggest albig you guys have now, or have had?
Mark once had a 6ft 2 inch female.

Jeff Lemm Nov 04, 2008 07:18 PM

Titan was the biggest we ever had

1 he called you a hater!
2. that monitor is not lookin 7 ft plus unless that guys like 6.6ish and hes lookin a little tiny to be holdin a 100 lb plus lizard that high. also why isnt it in a record book, or have a link on yahoo "world record monitor found in local town" or something like that. the pic of that red tail is taken on such an angle that he looks well over 12 ft too, and the majority max around there. good luck telling them they dont got it though, you gotta remember, theirs is the going to be the best because they want to have fame.

It's a great exaggeration. My male BT is between 5.5 to 6 ft and he's about 22-25lbs and just over 3 years old. The one in the pic is definitely a big BT, but nowhere even half the 120lbs he suggests.

Here is the site the photo was originally posted on, and the "shop" who posted it:

yeah plus look at the way the guy is holding it . . . if it weighed that much there's no way he'd be holding it like that. He'd be more hunched over and straining a bit.
