Egg Question

NYCMedic Oct 29, 2008 03:32 PM

My 5 year old fem just had her first clutch of 18 eggs. I immediately placed them in am incubator in a dish of vermiculite 4:1 with water. Its set at 84 deg. eggs were laid on oct 23. I noticed a few of them developing yellow soft spots on them and there is a slight foul odor coming from them. Are these dead? Should i get them out of there asap to prevent bacterial spread to the healthy eggs or do they still ahve a chance?

Four parts vermiculite to one part water? That seems rather dry. Usually its mixed either 2:1 or 1:1 by weight.

Is the smell more moldy or rotten egg smell? If rotten I will just remove the affected eggs. If just a moldy smell, you can gently try rubbing off the mold with a lightly damp cloth or paper towel and see what happens.

Yeah, thats what I would do too. I always went by feel rather than weight with the vermiculite. It should feel moist, and like stick together. You have a picture of your egg/incubator setup?
