Leopard frogs, food and tads!!!

cyclonegirl Sep 07, 2003 06:11 PM

I have new leopard frogs. My mom wants to know how often, and how many crickets to feed him, she thinks I'm starving him. So far, I feed him 3 crickets every other night.

Also can a leopard frog not be morphed this late in the season? I would post a picture of my "tad," but I don't know how. I will post a picture if you tell me how. But, for know I can just tell you that it is basically green with dark green and brown spots. I know he is not a bullfrog, because they were sharing a cage with bullfrog tadpoles. Is it a leopard frog?????

Thanks,
Cyclonegirl

I would say that the amount and frequency that you are feeding them is PERFECT, if anything it might be a little much. One of the problems with captive reptiles and amphibians is that they are usually overfed. People insist upon using what they know about dogs and cats and applying it to reptiles and amphibians. Always remember this: 80 percent of the food that we eat goes towards making body heat. That means that the vast majority of the food that we eat is lost to the atmosphere!! We are energy wasters!!! Ectotherms, on the other hand, use most all of the food that they eat for conversion to biomass (biomass equals new skin, leg muscles or fat etc., whatever). This means that they do not need to eat as often and as much and endotherms.

In order to post a picture, go to the following link...

Login, then go to upload pictures. When you make a new post, there is a drop-down menu under the red OR: where you can select the image you just uploaded. It really is simple. And there really is no way to correctly identify your tadpole from that description.

Yea, just tell that to my pacman frog. He's eating and not getting any fatter, but still eating like a madfrog.

So far I feed him 4 crickets every two days, then one feeding one day away of dusted crikets.
