I have a REAL BIG problem...

bmills Sep 07, 2003 06:12 PM

I am up at school, and my brother, who is 11, just IMed me and told me there are 4 eggs in my humid hide of my tank with my 2 females. I have 2 females and 1 male, they have never been together. How is this possible. Is it worth trying to hatch them or are they just infertile. Please give me any and all advice, I have no idea what to do, and neither does he, I didn't want to breed them, just have them. What's uP?

As long as you're sure about the sexes the eggs are infertile many animals lay eggs without the presence of a male.

I'm sure of the sexes of my leos, I have 2 females together, and then a male alone, and they have never all 3 been together, but don't they retain sperm for up to a year, so what if in the pet store they put a male with one of my females? Please let me know.

that is possible, you never know with pet stores. If you want just try to incubate. if they are infertile they will go bad pretty soon.

What are all of the signs of an infertile egg compared to a fertile egg?

Fertile eggs have a chalky leathery texture. I would still try to incubate them just in case. Tell your brother to keep them in the same position that he found them.

Okay. Actually my mom squished it, it was very very soft and sunken in she said, and she touched it and it squished more. I'm upset. I have to get them up to school with me so I can take care of them.

They get sunken in when there's not enough moisture. But yeah, infertile eggs have soft shells. How old are they now?

It was just a couple days old, my mom squished it though, so it's nothing anymore. I'm a little upset about that. It was most likely infertile, but there was still that chance.

Actually I've heard up to two years but this is extremely unlikely. The only reason for not producing the egss would be a lack off food or water. I highly doubt they are fertile if you feel the need you can incubate them but since you said you didn't want to breed them you can just throw them away.
