I'm new to Black Rat snakes and I can't find a whole lot of care info on them. Does anyone have a good site or info on them? What are their temperments like? Size?
Thanks

As far as caring for your snake goes, you can use a Corn Snake Care Sheet for your animal.
Note that Black Rats grow a little larger then your average Corn Snake and they like to climb.
I keep Easter Black Rats that are very dark, and are almost patternless. If you treat your animal kindly and handle it often, it will tame down and make a great pet.
The longest Black Rat on record was 101" in length. For the most part, a good sized male can reach 6 feet when well fed and well cared for.
Good luck with your snake.
Rick
I did the same research within the last two weeks.
There is a WEALTH of info, including studies of diet done in Ontario and VA.
Search on both common & scientific names. (There is a dispute right now in the scientific community about the proper sceintific name: Elaphe vs. Pantherophis.)

I like the idea of a 40 gal breeder tank for Black Rats the best. I take issue with all baby Black Rats biting. Yes, some do but others don't. I know because I have breed them. Yes, my baby GPRS were much calmer, but the Black Rats were more fun. They are great animals and are a joy to keeep.

They're a favorite here, too! We're up to 16 in our house, though. They really are amazing animals. As they said, corn snake care, but a 30 or 40 gallon aquarium. I have some that are OK in the equivalent of a 30, but others that I wouldn't house in anything less than a 40.
These snakes are extremely hardy, and it's hard to do something wrong with them. The only thing to really watch out for is nose rubs- they're inclined to get them if kept in too small of cages.
Most of my adults are tamer than any of my corn snakes even, and my big female (a bit over 5 feet) is the snake I use to introduce snakes to little kids! I let my 4 year old little brother hold her without any fear at all.
Definitely a great snake to get into!

I agree with Ronnie, my B.Rat is about 7' and my first choice to show kids as he is calm, never one to bite. The babies and yearlings are nippy bit this I think is from fearlessness not from nervousness. (if that makes sence(?)) What I'm trying to say is that a fearless snake will calm down eventually and be comfortable with people while a snake that nips out of nervousness will always be skitish and unpredictable to a degree. (kind of like people, huh?)
