Another newbie breeding question.

Kyle_B Oct 30, 2008 04:57 PM

Hi everyone, been lurking here for a long time but have never posted. This is my first time attempting to breed and I have a question, I have had my male together with my female for approximately 3 weeks. I have witnessed a lot of courting, a few tail wraps, but not actual copulation. The male will act very interested one day, then have nothing to do with her the next, and so on. I don't know if she has ovulated, personally I can't tell. What should I be looking for next? How do I know if she has ovulated? When should I separate for feeding? or should I? Anyway, I thank you all for reading this and your answers in advance.

I'm no expert, but since there are no replies I'll jump in.

First I would read the breeding guide on theboaphile dot com website. He has a bunch of great info in there. Most breeders leave the male in until he is completely disinterested in the female for over a week. So if they are courting just leave them be. If they are in good health I think most breeders don't feed the female until after breeding is done and the male is out. I would not feed them in the same enclosure. And males maybe a small meal every 2 weeks, or maybe not until he's done. Many people don't see the ovulation and end up with babies. I would make sure the temps are correct and that they have fresh water and leave them alone.

Hopefully someone with a bit more experience will chime in.

Good luck

Thanks for your input. I have read Jeff's breeding guide that was published in Reptiles magazine I believe and it has some very good information in there. For the most part I have left them alone but I did separate them once to feed small meals. I think I will just leave them alone until they are no longer interested in each other and see what happens. Again, thanks for your input.
