Not sure I understand your post. But, here is my thought. Do you plan on living in a dorm room. Because if you do, then you can forget about brining anything into the room, especially the size of a burm. Now if you are getting an apartment then that is a different story. I loved my burm very easy and docile. Redtails are hardier, but mine has turned nippy. I would consider the size and where you are going to live and have room for, but both snakes are great. Burms cost more to feed.

I am triing to way the pros and the cons i know they are both great snakes. I am not just going into college I have my own house sorry if I was confusing. They have science days with grade schools and as a treat I bring in many of my reptiles for them to interact with and educate and I would like to add a larger snake to my collection and am deciding between the two.

Well that all depends on you. There is somthing to be said about having a burm in your collection. You have to consider size of the cage, and feeding. Burms cost more to feed. My female burm I had a six foot cage for, she started to out grow that in 3 years and I was thinking about moving her into an 8ft cage.

You could always look into a blood python, they get as thick just not as long.

Pros to a burm are most are docile and easy going.
Cons: Heavy, poop like a horse, eat like a horse and cage size.

Boa

Pros: Again can be docile and easy going, get heavy but not that heavy.
Cons: Its not a burm

This is a choice you will have to make. If there is one you want over the other then get that one and make it work. Heck, my first snake was a boa, I ended up getting a burm next.

This is just my thoughts and I could be wrong but Boas are hardier snakes than burms. A large snake in a large cage is hard to keep temps right, depending on the spot of the cage.

Ok, I'm sure you know this, but just in case, burms are a much MUCH bigger responsibility than a redtail. Burms get enormous and have to be fed on large prey such as rabbits eventually. It appears as though you have rabbits as pets, would you be comfortable feeding a rabbit to a snake? Also, when you keep rabbits as pets, it would be crucial not to handle a burm if you had the scent of a rabbit on you. Burms have a feeding response unlike any snake I've ever seen (retics may be up there too, but I haven't had direct experience). If a burm were to mistake you for food because you forgot to wash your hands, it could be deadly.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from getting a burm necessarily. They're my favorite snakes. I love their attitude, they are very personable, calm and not the least bit skittish. But they aren't the best choice for a first large snake.

Thank you for your responses. I have no problem feeding rabbits or that. Yea I know to wash very good. I am leaning towards taking a smaller step and going with the red tail first. Still not 100% but leaning that way.
