AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION 06 October 08 Call of love to curtail cane toads
The spread of the cane toad through northern Australia could be controlled using the species' own mating call.
A project run by the Kimberley Toad Busters is recording toad sounds in the wild and in captivity, in hope of interpreting them.
Researcher David Kentish says audio broadcast equipment may be used in the bush to call in the toads for capture.
"We've got to run some controlled recordings, so we know we are recording exactly the right thing," he says.
"We need to do research, then play back those calls to see what the effect is.
"If we get a positive, of course, that could be used to attract other toads, which can be trapped and they can be delt with as is necessary."
