Savannah Monitor feeding and caging ??

Anselmo1 Oct 31, 2008 10:59 AM

Hello,

My wife and I both have Savannah Monitors, both currently in two separate cages. I just moved my monitor to a much larger cage, large enough for both of them to be in happy in for a while.

They are about the same size, my Sav maybe 4 inches longer and a tad bit thicker. Would it be advisable to try and house them together? The new cage would be a mass improvement for both of them, but I am apprehensive.

Also my monitor has "give up" mice and insects. He/she will only eat eggs and ground turkey. I held of feeding for a few days and introduced rodents and insects again with no success.

Should I be concerned?

Twice a week supplemented with vitamins/calcium.

Thank you,

Eric

I would get them back on some kind of meaty diet, whatever that may be. I'm no dietician but i am pretty sure eggs and ground turkey won't cut it forever.

About the housing I just went through (am currently going through) the same exact situation. I built the cage and put them in together. The male stopped eating but i learned he has to be fed either in a smaller cage by himself or in the big cage by himself; either way, by himself. The cage i built is big enough for each to have their own hiding spot, basking spot, pooping spot etc... and i think that is important so there is no issues of territory stuff. besides the feeding thing all seems to be ok so far.
How big is the enclosure you plan to put each of them in?

Good luck.

Ground turkey and eggs are not going to work as a staple. You can look into the turkey diet. Ground turkey by itself is lacking though. I would be looking at my husbandry very closely if my monitor was refusing mice. Sounds like something else might be off. Posting pics of your setup and more detailed info about your temperatures and such might be worth while.
