My Black Rat Rescue Story

Ameron Oct 31, 2008 11:15 AM

The local Craig's List ad stated that "He" was about 4 feet long. He had been kept in a 10-gallon terrarium, inside of a 60-gallon terrarium housing a larger python.

Can you imagine the discomfort & terror of the Black Rat?

Turns out that She is over 5 feet five inches!

Good news is that she now has a 60-gallon vivarium complete with rock ledge, wood pile, climbing branches, vines and rocks with lichen colonies (some maintained since 1993).

She had a slight scar under her right eye from a prior rodent bite, since treated with Betadine and almost completely healed.

She gets excercised daily, gets to climb trees and has only once lightly hissed when I surprised her when picking up. She's my best reptile companion (pet) ever. I can hardly wait for spring and more outdoor adventures.

I wish that someone would comment on my prior post about independent eye movement. This is the first time I've seen that capability in a snake.

Not able to post photos yet, until I establish a Flickr account. Until next time...

One lucky snake. One very nice keeper. I am sure the snake is much happier.

Thanks for posting. It is always nice to hear rescue stories.

Rick

PS: How about a picture of this animal.

Yes a picture would be nice but you discribed a nice enclosure for the snake, I'd like to see that.
I have a black rat that is close to 7' now, had him since he was the size of a #2 pencil. It's my favorite snake for his personality. He's as gentile as a kitten but is also very active. There are big snakes that I could see being in a smallish enclosure as they are by nature quite inactive. Not a black rat though, mine is almost always prowling about(calmly). He's been in a 55 gal. tank but will soon be moved to a 125 so he can better stretch out in when I finally finish my reptile room.
I like how you've added a woodpile and such. I would like to see the setup.
Mike.

I could send a photo, but only via e-mail.

I don't wish to publish my e-mail address, however, and you don't likely either.

Maybe later this week I'll get a Flickr account and begin to be able to post photos via referenced URL.
