Ribbbon snake photos..

riobravoreptiles Nov 01, 2008 07:23 AM

.. what a beauty! In Brownsville, Texas yesterday.
.

.
I found that big girl way out in the middle of no-where.. Someone had come through after the big rains we had in September with a large vehicle of some sort and left huge bottomless ruts (and an impassible pit) filled with gumbo .. my old Chevy truck could only make it by straddling the 'road'. It was interesting going in.. but with no place to turn around, getting out was even more interesting!
.

.
.. that's my red Chevy way up the 'road' at the top of this pic..
.

.
.. I did also tie my all-time record for scorpion stings in one outing..
.
Anyway.. enjoy the photos!

Looks like a Gulf Coast Ribbon. There are many of this species that live around the ditch that runs along my back yard. Just yesterday the water was almost dried up from lack of rain, and I counted 17 ribbons taking advantage of the drowning fish. Many were neonates. Common, but cool snakes.

You have already impressed me a lot. Maybe that was just some jealousy coming out. Didn't mean any offense. I love your posts. Keep them up. I would love to get down to that neck of the woods some day. I live in SW La, so its not an undoable trip. I've been to Corpis, but didn't do any herping.

Oh heck! don't take it so seriously. I did think your reply was a little 'elitist' but so what? we are all pals here.. I was just poking you back.
.
I have a friend of exactly 30 years who is not impressed with anything I may do at all, even if he has never seen it.. once I called him from Quintana Roo, Mexico.. I was standing in a rainstorm and wanted to ask him a question about a snake I was holding (and he woud know the answer).. I couldn't get more than a few words out before he started telling me of a coachwhip snake he had seem earlier! There's simply nothing he can't 'TOP' or ignore!
.
Don't worry, keep up the good work, be safe! Here's a photo.

That is a gorgeous ribbon. Can you elaborate on the scorpion stings? How do the get you....when you reach down or get in your shoes? What are the stings like?

Thanks again for the nice pics,
Dan

.
.. when I put my hands and fingers in cracks and under stuff without looking carefully enough..
.
That about covers it!
