Thanks for Patience on "Tree Snake" Idea

Ameron Nov 01, 2008 04:47 PM

The recent taxonomy changes from the scientific community had me confused, and thus kindled my ideas and questions. (I do feel that there are enough differences between New World & Old World rat snakes to warrant the Pantherophis designation from Elaphe.)

I was only speculating, throwing out ideas for comments. I'm also able to change my mind, once new information is available.

Some persons replied back courteously, making several important points.

Some persons seemed quite upset that I challenged the Status Quo, and offered alternative idea. (Which is the reason for this forum.)

I deeply regret how OFFENDED & UPSET some people got! Yikes, it's good that I was not them - and any heavy objects they might have thrown!

Anyway, I'm an adult, and I will get over the challenges to my ideas & assertions. I'll continue calling them Rat Snakes, and continue cherishing my Black Rat wonder called Shawnee.

Thanks for your time & consideration. I look forward to future topics & discussions.

Yea, some folks (including myself) do get carried away at times. All in all, it is a nice group.

While I thought your idea was a little off the mark, you have just as much right as anyone to express your ideas. You may get a few harsh comments when you do, but most of the readers are supportive of thoughtful people.

Here's a picture of "one eye" a male black rat that stays in the hollow of this tree in my front yard sometimes. One morning there was a shed hanging from a branch of this tree about 7 feet up. A female must have also used this tree as there were 3 fresh hatchling sheds dangling just outside the hole this year.
This photo taken last year after we coaxed him out to take a frozen thawed mouse off tongs. We're in southeastern Va.
