Huge Retic Question...

Luke Snyder Nov 02, 2008 12:04 PM

So I just saw this video with a very large retic. It is claimed to be 49 feet long, im wondering if this claim was ever verified. The snake in the video is really big, but I dont know about 49 feet, i figured id come here to find out.

Thanks

This same (lame) video keeps coming around again and again....
Got a little bitty Indonesian guy in it, with a big ol' Retic - and a few tricks with the camera angles. Tricks that don't hold up very well, once everyone starts moving around in the film.
While big, that snake is almost certainly less than 25 feet long. Certainly NOT any 49 feet in length!

I just saw a bit about that thing on Animal Planet the other night.I'm not sure how long it is, but he did not catch it that size.He has had that thing for years and it is very obviously, grossly overfed.According to what they said on the show, it's diet consists of mainly dogs.

I don't see how discovery channel, animal planet, and national geographic can keep showing these videos. It really makes me question their credibility on all of their programs. That snake would have to be double the length of those in any credible retic breeders collection. The sad thing is most of the public believes these claims of "giant monsters", which doesn't help our efforts as snakekeepers to inform the public. I'm sure congress will soon ban "any boids that exceed the 50 foot range". I guess we will have to figure out something else to do with these snakes of myth and imagination.

Thanks, that was what I was looking for. It seemed a little rediculous, I couldn't understand how I hadnt heard of a 49 foot retic....because it never existed. And Tales of Giant Snakes is a great book!!!!!

Take care,
Luke Snyder

Luke, the biggest Retic I have personally ever seen was in the Zoo in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1988. Brian Sharp was with me and I believe it was 26-28' long and well over 300 lbs. It was said to have been collected on the Island of Sumatra. There is no question in my mind that rarely they may exceed 30' in length as I have had several over 20'. In fact Pete Kahl had a humerous and potentionally dangerous experience with a 22' snake at my shop in the 1990's. Thats another story I won't relate at this time.....TC
