First time daddy

I've owned leopard geckos for a little over a year and just introduced a male to my five females about 6 weeks ago. Last night, one of my females dropped two eggs in her lay box. I made an incubator on my own with a styrofoam cooler half filled with water, containing an aquarium heater on the highest setting. In the middle I have a vented separator which the egg box is sitting with the two eggs. It seems to be working well, the temp is at a steady 84 and humidity is at about 90. The eggs feel like rubber balls, So I assume that they are fertile. Will I experience changes to the texture of the eggs? Will they develop a more leathery, chalky feel to them, or will they stay fairly moist? And when will I be able to determine whether or not they are for sure fertile? I am extremely excited and hope that all goes well for my first attempt at breeding. Any help or pointers would be most appreciated. Once again, thanks for any words of wisdom.

if they feel like rubber balls they are most likely infertile. they usually harden up a few hours after being laid. but incubate them and you might get lucky.

Congratulations!! I know it's so exciting to get your first eggs. I see how much work it takes my leos to lay eggs, so I always feel like I owe it to them to work hard too.

I'm not sure what you mean by rubber ball texture. Do you mean smooth like a rubber ball, or just a rubbery feel? If they feel firm, then you should be ok.

yea, if they're rubbery after a few hours they are problably infertile. 4 out of 6 eggs layed by my female so far are infertile. It takes patience and a little luck. But you never know. Incubate them and if they dont mold they'll be ok.

The eggs had a hard boiled egg feel to them when I put them in the incubator. I just checked on them and they have developed a more hard, but flexible surface to them. Can I hold an egg up to a light and look inside for an embryo, or do I need to wait a week or so? Thanks.

the hardening is what should happen. you could candle it now, but the longer you wait the easier it will be.
