waterproof with room material

tbone21 Nov 04, 2008 10:07 AM

I dont know what it is called but hopefully someone knows what I am talking about. The rubber like stuff they put down on flat roofs so water stays off. Would this work to put on a floor of a cage with the reptile carpet over it? I am building a platform with a pond in it for a temporary holding for my caiman and then turtles. I just had my roof done and there is scraps of this stuff and was just wondering?

When you say scraps I assume you mean the sheet material that comes in a roll? Or do you mean one of the sprayable or rollable liquid coatings?

The liquid coatings should work okay but make sure they are low VOC (most of them are). They are not the easiest to clean. But if you have just a small amount left over it might be worth a try.

If you have some of the stuff that came off of a roll then I don't think you should use it. It is nearly impossible to get any adhesive to stick to it well enough to prevent moisture penetration. This is avoided on roofs with flashing and layering. There are some tapes that stick to them but they are solvent based and I would not want them in a reptile enclosure.

It is also somewhat hard to clean, like the liquid coatings.

With that said, there are numerous roof coatings out there so it is entirely possible there is a product quite different from the two generalizations I discussed above.
