Hello everyone... I am new here!

ajw0805 Nov 04, 2008 10:07 PM

Hey everybody. I wanted to introduce myself to the thread. I recently purchased a new baby beardie from a reptile show here in VA. To make a long story short... We had previously purchased a baby from Petsmart (i know I know... bad idea), anyhow they sold me a sick bearded dragon... knowingly. She had a sytemic disease and got all of these cysts all over her within just two weeks. we ended up having to put her down . So now we have SPIKE! I am sure I will have ALOT of questions as we are new to the bearded dragon family. I have been thoroughly schooled on proper husbandry. Spike is about 3 months old and is about 9 1/2 inches long. I have NO idea if that is big, small, normal, or what! Anyhow he is eating about 60-75 small crickets a day as well as peas and gren beans. I did just find out today that he tested positive for coccidia and giardia. I will be taking him to the vet on Thursday to get meds. He is actually showing no signs (diarrhea, poor eating, etc.), so I htink i caught it early enough.. hopefully. I don't want to end up with another sick one. Although I do know it will be a pain to get rid of them. Anyhow, i am hoping to get a pic on here soon, once I figure it out! Take care!

Congrats. on your new Beardie.

Just be sure you use a probiotic after you treat for coccidia.

Do I use it (probiotic) after, or during?

I start it as soon as I am done with the Albon.

Congrats on your new dragon!!!

A probiotic will definately help keep the appetite up during and after the albon treatment. You can start during the treatment, or after - whichever works for you. If you start to notice a decrease in your dragons appetite once starting the albon then i would start using the acidophiliz asap.

You can buy reptile acidophiliz from www.reptilesupply.com - its flavored and liquid and the dragons usually will lick it if you drop it on their noses

Hi, I wouldn't advise using peas and green beans as staples, just as occasional treats. Try to switch him over to leafy greens. The best ones are mustard, dandelion, turnip, collards, kale. You can mix in a little romaine to get him started but it's not very rich in nutrients. Avoid cabbage and spinach.

Good luck with your new baby

Just a quick note - Kale is ok occasionally but contains calcium binders called oxalates so it should not be used as a staple.

Collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, collard greens, endive, and escarole are all great staple greens.
