my newt is badly infected!

llyncilla Sep 07, 2003 09:11 PM

I found out today why my newt isn't eating. His back right foot is so badly infected that half of it has rotted off and the flesh is practically falling off; he also has a red wound on his head and two on his side. When I bought him I'd noticed that he was missing a digit on his back right foot, but it didn't appear infected. Well, it sure as hell is now, and I think those frickin crickets and mealworms bit the poor guy when I left them with him overnight to see if he'd eat when unattended! I looked up what to do on caudata central and I have him in a dirt quarantine, and I've cleaned his wounds with hydrogen peroxide and treated them with neosporin. I plan to take him to the vet tomorrow. If any one has any other suggestions, PLEASE let me know. Also, should I keep him very cold? And should I still try to feed him, or should I just leave him alone since he's freaking out enough from the treatments?

Infection is not the problem, although its a safe bet that he has one at this point. The problem is that you are feed crickets and mealworms to your newt, or should I say that you are feeding your newt to your crickets and mealworms. Crickets and mealworms will eat your newt! do not leave them alone together!
I have red belly newts and I keep them in a completely aquatic environment and feed them sinking pellets(Newt Bites), they do much better that way.
