Breeding weight?

bellapython Nov 05, 2008 11:08 AM

Can someone tell me, for a Western Hog, what the ideal weight is for a breeding female? She has the age but she's 250.grams.
What is a safe temp to cool her & the male down to & for how long?
Thanks in advance. I've bred balls but never these guys.

250 is good, 300 would be better. I do not cool my hogs.

How does your clutches turn out since you dont cool them?

Thanks Jenea! I'm glad I asked the experts. It won't be hard to add the 50.g's on because she always wants to eat. What is an average clutch size?

FloridaHogs Nov 05, 2008 04:04 PM

I have had clutches range from 12 eggs to 32. Big girls tend to lay bigger clutches. The 32 egger was from a 400 g girl, the 12 to 14 egg clutches are from 250 to 300g girls. I live in FL so cooling is difficult, plus in 07 I had 2 girls lay in October, and one doubled on me and laid again in Nov. Can't brumate when they are doing that!! LOL!! I don't think they read all the books about what they are "suppose" to do!

This is very interesting and something I would like to try and learn more about. Even though burmating isnt really a challenge for me(TN here)....

That is cool that they will produce without being 'cool' lol

Does this seem to effect the vigor of the hatchlings or anything

do you have usually 100% hatch rates?.....

29 out of 32
15 out of 16
10 out of 16 (had a couple of twins in this clutch, so it was a wierd one.)
