Black Bloods

Natures_Fury Nov 05, 2008 05:49 PM

Ihave worked with bloods off and on. mostly when i get them in with shipment. I love the little guys, they have such cute little personalities. I was wanting to know, specifically, what is the latin name for the black blood. What is the common name. I have been trying to wrangle up a trio of blacks and just want to be sure they are true blacks.

exactly how many locals/morphs of bloods are there

Black bloods are Python curtus and are only found on the island of Sumatra. Captive blacks are available from Jeff Hartwig, VPI, BloodPythons.com to name a few.

Rich answered the black portion. There are 4 localities of Short Tailed Pythons (AKA Blood Pythons)

Red Blood, Blood Python, Malaysian Blood - Python brongersmai
Black Blood or Sumatran Short Tail - Python curtus
Borneo Short tail (or borneo blood)(note sarawaks are a locality of the borneo STPs) - Python breitensteini

I did hear a rumor recently that the Sarawaks may be becoming a different species. I also think the above listing is in popularity. The red is #1 but recently it seems more people are getting into the borneos. I personally love and own all 4.

Morph wise, have fun guessing that one. Kara and Ryan over at bloodpythons.com have some amazing things, Tracy and Dave Barker are kicking out some insane stuff, Our Big County Jason has some wonderful Bombs at redpython.net. The breeders will have to comment on the morphs.

For me, anything stripey is just plain cool, I love the tiger and ivories as well. In regards to blacks, chrome heads all the way baby!
