Pink Bellied Pac Gophers

FunkyRes Nov 06, 2008 01:32 AM

Way back in the 80s I had some (WC) from west Contra Costa County, CA.

I've found a few pink bellied DOR up here in Redding (Shasta County, CA) but the 1.1 pair I have (WC) are cream bellied.

Does anyone know the genetics behind the pink bellied pac gophers?
Is it a simple trait, or is it complex trait, or is anything at all known about it?

I really like the with the pink bellies.

Anyone here have any? I'd love to see pics.
Does it also occur with San Diego or Great Basin or other P c subspecies?

I *think* I've seen photos of S.D. with pink bellies.

I don't think I've seen any with pink bellies though I haven't personally dealt with many Pacifics. The first thing that comes to mind for me is if the only time you've seen the pink bellies is on a DOR, that something in the death/decay process is turning the bellies pink. Just my two cents. Take care.

Only one's I've seen in Redding are DOR.

I had a couple WC from west Contra Costa County - what the hell, I'll be more specific - from the railroad tracks that run behind a community called "Montalvin Manner" by the San Pablo Bay and from the field by the elementary school in Montalvin Manner.

I've not found that many live up here, and most of the DORs I've found are cream belly - but I have found a few DORs with pink belly.

I also found a baby striped variation in Pinole (near Pinole Valley Road) but he escaped - the striped variation was a cream belly though, and a poor quality striped (the stripes were broken in many places)

I have a wierd colored male with a pink belly. He sired 2 clutches for me this year. All the babies look like the sire and have pink bellies. You can see a little bit of the belly in one of the pics.

I had never really noticed pink bellies before but after you posted I checked the pacific gophers I have and discovered that two of the four have pink or orange bellies.

One is my male amel pos het anery that I got from Jason Nelson. It has a pink orange belly for much, if not all, of it's body. Keep in mind however that it is a very colorful amel with tons of bright orange and pink all over.

The other one is a striped pos het amel/anery that I got from John Meltzer recently for the friend of mine who maintains my Q room at his residence. This one has no orange but a good amount of pink tones to the belly. I don't have any belly shots but I will post some group shots of the four snakes as soon as I finish cropping the pics.
