A Shed Question

theLady Nov 06, 2008 05:22 PM

Hello all. Just had a question about the shedding process. My king has always shed in one piece, no problems there. My question was about the phases of shedding and about the moss box:

When her eyes go blue I put that shed stump with moss in her cage. She will stay in there for a long time, seems like she doesn't leave. She stays in there for quite some time after her eyes go back to normal. I have heard of health issues related to vivs that have too much moisture. So my question is how long should I provide her the moss box? Should I take it out when her eyes turn back? B/c in one instance she stayed in the box for I think it was four days after her eyes turned back to normal. Just curious, thanks!

Just as long as it's only a box it should be fine. The problems generally occur when the whole cage is to wet. They will also hang out in the box when they are not in shed.

yes, as that is a part of my question! she stays in there!

once her eyes turn back, should i take her out n let her shed? because i know that she has shed within two or three days of her eyes going blue. now i've had the box provided for about 5 or 6 days now. i don't want her in the box is my point, as she may poop in there and stay in the box with her feces over night

If the snake likes the moist hide, then leave it in there. If you have to clean it out every now and then, no big deal. It won't hurt the snake as long as it isn't to wet, just moist. I have found that many snakes enjoy a moist hide and will use it often, regardless of shedding or not. It is especially good for neonates, as it helps them stay hydrated. That's just my opinion and experience.

One more thing. My snakes rarely defecate in their hides, but there are some exceptions. One night in feces shouldn't hurt the health of your snake as long as it is cleaned the next day.
