variable king excessive? shedding

ronh Nov 06, 2008 09:21 PM

My variable kingsnake has shed twice since being purchased. She hasn't eaten since 2nd shed but is preparing to shed again one month later. Is this normal? Any answers or similar experiences?
Thanks

How old is the snake? Snakes will shed more when young, whether they are eating or not. The same goes true however, if the snake is ill or injured in an attempt to repair the intugement. Does your snake otherwise appear healthy? Any wounds? Dehydrated? Look closely on the snake, in the water dish, and elsewhere for mites; a common cause for skin problems.

In the mean time, concentrate on making sure your husbandry is absolutely perfect, super clean (not the time for a naturalistic vivarium if that's the case), and monitor weight for losses.

If you can't get this guy eating, and are seeing losses approaching 10%, you need veterinary help. Of course, if you are seeing other problems in addition to anorexia and frequent shedding, you'll need to make an appointment sooner.

Good luck

Ian
